Composition, community structure and vertical distribution of epiphytic ferns on Alsophila setosa Kaulf., in a Semideciduous Seasonal Forest, Morro Reuter, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica
Schneider,Paulo Henrique; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro.
In tropical forests, tree ferns constitute an important phorophyte for the establishment and occurrence of epiphytic species. Composition, structure and vertical distribution of epiphytic ferns were studied on Alsophila setosa Kaulf., in a semideciduous seasonal forest fragment, in the city of Morro Reuter (29º32'07"S and 51º05'26"W), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The sample consisted of 60 caudices of at least 4 m high, which were divided in 1 m intervals from the ground. The specific importance value was estimated trough the coverage value and caudex frequency at the intervals. A total of 14 species was recorded, belonging to 10 genera and five families. The highest specific richness occurred in Polypodiaceae. The rarefaction curve for the...

Cystoseira baccata meadows along the French Basque coast (Bay of Biscay) as a reference for the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy EU directives ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Derrien-courtel, Sandrine; Lalanne, Yann; Maria Gorostiaga, José; Le Gal, Aodren; Huguenin, Laura; Quintano, Endika; Lissardy, Muriel.
Cystoseira baccata, a biological quality element for the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy EU Directives, is a dominant species in the subtidal rocky bottoms of the Basque coast. As part of this issue and given the need to better understand the functional character of benthic rocky ecosystems and use them as a reference to anthropogenic changes, two samplings campaigns were conducted in 2014 and 2017. Several population parameters (i.e. frond density, frond length frond-length/total frond-length ratio and taxonomic richness of epibionts) of C. baccata were studied from three sites monitored within the Water Directive Framework in relation to bathymetry during the two campaigns. The results showed a significant influence of...

Dry matter partitioning differences between shoots and roots in two contrasting genotypes of orchids and their relationship with endogenous levels of auxins, cytokinins and abscisic acid Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
PERES,LÁZARO E. P.; MAJEROWICZ,NIDIA; KERBAUY,GILBERTO B..
Epiphytic orchids have been considered an interesting model for plant development and may have unusual features related to the hormonal control of shoot and root growth. In the present experiment we have studied two genotypes of Catasetum fimbriatum Lindl. (Orchidaceae) with an inverse pattern of shoot and root dry matter accumulation. Whereas the CFC1 genotype directs 60% of dry matter towards the shoot system, this same amount is directed towards the root system in the CFC4 genotype. Differences in the endogenous content of cytokinins, IAA and ABA, as well as differences in IAA conjugation and oxidation in shoots and roots were observed in the two genotypes. These differences were correlated with their dry matter partitioning patterns. Thus, the genotype...

EPIPHYTIC LICHENS OF CONGUILLÍO NATIONAL PARK, SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Rubio,Cecilia; Saavedra,Marcelo; Cuéllar,Mauricio; Díaz,Rodrigo; Quilhot,Wanda.
One hundred and thirty eight epiphytic lichen species in 40 genera, are recorded from Conguillio National Park (38°30'-38°50' S; 71°30'-71°55' W), with predominancy of typically southern South American species. Lichen diversity is high, about 9 % of the lichen mycobiota from Chile, due mainly to species of the genera Bunodophoron, Menegazzia, Nephroma,, Pannaria, Protousnea and Pseudocyphellaria. Levels of endemism are rather high (nearly 40 %); also austral and cosmopolitan species, about 19 % and 16 % respectively, are the most representative biogeographical elements in the Park.

Geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads of the Una region, Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Fontoura,Talita; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
Many Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest plant and animal species are geographically restricted to Southern Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo States. We investigated the geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in the lowland forest of the Una region (15° 17' 34' S - 39° 04' 30'' W) in Southern Bahia. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: i) what is the extent of each species distribution?; and ii) are the Bromeliaceae subfamilies distributed differently from one another? Almost half of the 40 species (47.5%) occur exclusively in the Southern Bahia-Northern Espírito Santo region and are herein referred as endemic species. The highest percentage of the 15 species of Tillandsioideae (46.7%) occur throughout the South American Continent and...

Notes on the taxonomy and ecology of the genus Hoya (Asclepiadaceae) in Central Sulawesi Naturalis
Kleijn, David; Donkelaar, Ruurd van.
The taxonomy and ecology of the genus Hoya R.Br, are unclear, especially in the core area of its distribution: Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya. This paper summarises the available information on the ecology of Hoya species, and describes eight species from central Sulawesi. An important ecological trait of many Hoya species is their association with ants. Four types of mutualistic relationships with ants occur in the genus: 1) species with specialised leaves to house ants; 2) a single species that provides housing for ants under imbricate leaves; 3) species growing on the carton of ant nests; and 4) species that root in ant inhabited cavities in tree trunks and branches. Four of the eight described species grew in association with ants (types...

SURVEY OF BENTHIC DINOFLAGELLATESASSOCIATED TO BEDS OF Thalassia testudinumIN SAN ANDRÉS ISLAND, SEAFLOWER BIOSPHERE RESERVE,CARIBBEAN COLOMBIA. Acta biol.Colomb.
RODRIGUEZ,E. ANGELICA; MANCERA PINEDA,J. ERNESTO; GAVIO,BRIGITTE.
In order to determine the occurrence of epiphytic toxic dinoflagellates in the coastal waters of San Andrés Island, Caribbean Colombia, we analyzed the seagrass beds on the northern and eastern sides of the island. We found seven species of toxicogenic dinoflagellates, belonging to the genera Prorocentrum and Ostreopsis. The cell densities were generally low if compared with previous studies in other Caribbean sites, ranging from 0 to 836 cells/dry weight. The species encountered are known to produce toxins causing the Diarrehic Shellfish Poisoning and Ciguatera, poisonings which have been documented in the island

Taxonomy of Sinningia Nees (Gesneriaceae) in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Ferreira,Gabriel Emiliano; Chautems,Alain; Waechter,Jorge Luiz.
ABSTRACTThe genus Sinningia belongs to the Neotropical tribe Gesnerieae, subtribe Ligeriinae, presently consisting of only three genera, Paliavana, Sinnigiaand Vanhouttea. These genera were separated from a larger concept of tribe Gloxinieae based on phylogenetic studies with molecular data. In Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, 12 species and one natural hybrid of Sinningiahave been recorded. Species of Sinningia in this area are erect or ascending herbs or subshrubs arising from underground or partially exposed tubers. They grow in very distinct ecological conditions, from water-saturated marshes to dry grasslands or shrublands, but most often in rupicolous or epiphytic habitats commonly associated with forest environments. In this review we provide an...

Vascular epiphyte biomass in a South Brazilian fragment of Atlantic Forest Anais da ABC (AABC)
PETEAN,MARISE P.; MARCON,AMANDA K.; LIEBSCH,DIETER; GALVÃO,FRANKLIN; KERSTEN,RODRIGO A..
Abstract The present study aimed at sampling the biomass of vascular epiphytes within a protected area in South Brazilian Atlantic Forest. All tree specimens with diameter at breast height equal or greater than 4.8 cm were measured and divided into classes. In each class, 10% of tree specimens were randomly selected for epiphytic biomass measuring. Furthermore, we divided the phorophytes into five tree parts to analyze epiphytic biomass. We generated mathematical models to estimate epiphytic biomass in similar forest areas. We analyzed 55 phorophytes and found an estimated epiphytic biomass of 5.3 Mg/ha. Epiphytic biomass ranged from 0.02 to 135 kg and the lower values were found on small-sized phorophytes. Higher values of epiphytic biomass were found on...
